Essay & Composition Writing

Some people believe that school children should not be given homework by their teachers, wheraes others argue that homework plays an important role in the education of children. Discuss both of these views and give your own opinion.

People have different views with regard to giving children homework. Although doing homework pose several drawbacks, I believe that it will greatly benefit children and should not be excluded from school programme.

On the one hand, homework also has a large number of negative effects on children. To begin with, students are capable of being depressed and stressful with loads of homework. There has been an investigation which was published in the Journal of Experimental Education by sampling 4317 students at 10 favorite high schools in California. Nearly 2420 students admit doing extra academic exercises is the major reason which results in pressure. This leads to an attitude of learning that fulfills obligations rather than actually understanding the meaning of the lessons. Besides, Asian students will normally spend 6-7 hours studying at school while it just takes Finnish students 4-5 hours to learn at schools. Furthermore, all students always take 15 minutes to break after every 45 minutes, that is why they feel enthusiastic in almost lessons. Most students in Finland do not have homework, even Finnish high school students are possible to graduate without a national exam.

On the other hand, I think homework plays a vital role in education of children for some reasons. Firstly, homework would act as a powerful tool among children by ensuring them to keep pace with content of their study and build up a responsible attitude between their learning time and playing time effectively. By this way, students can realize how precious time is and will not waste it in vain. Moreover, doing schoolwork not only trains the student's brain to think carefully, sharply and strictly but it also expand their knowledge to dig into what they learn previously. Sometimes, children' s extra academic exercises are really useful documents that require student's answers that go beyond what they study in the books but it still have a connection with material.

In summary, it seems to me that free-homework policy should not be implemented because it will make enormous counterproductive effects on children's all-round development. Homework plays an important role in shaping their way of acquiring knowledge and this will enable them to grow as a well-educated citizen for the whole society.
