Some people believe that if a police force carries guns, this encourages higher level of violence in that society. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Some people argue that the state of rampant violence due to arming the police force has become more exacerbated. While I agree that the gun ownership of policemen may inevitably provoke violence in some cases, I also strongly believe that the police should be equipped with guns in terms of ensuring the security of society and the safety of people as well.

To begin with, routinely arming the police would cause a downward spiral of violence. Once the police are armed, criminals who do not match their capability would operate under a strong disadvantage. Therefore, the crime world is far more likely to fully arm itself in response in order to cope with difficult situations. What's more, the gun ownership of the police may lead to fatal consequenses. In few cases, police officers might lose control over their behaviour due to their strong emotions like anger and infuence of alcohol. As a result, they might unintentionally injury or even kill unarmed offenders and innocent people around them with guns, causing fear to residential communities.

However, the police should be armed for the sake of social security and order. Gun crime is on the rise as more gang members and criminals are arming themselves to commit crimes. The police officers who are equipped with guns in case of assaults and battery or other kind of life-threatening actions, for example, would act as a deterrent to dangerous offenders. Another arguement in favor of arming the police would be that the role of the police force is to protect all the law-abiding citizens from gun-related crime. People may feel safer when they see armed police, especially if they perceive them as a response to a heightened risk. Last but not least, arming police officers allows them to safeguard themselves. There is an alarming increase in gun ownership which would increase the potential risks to frontline police officers of being the victims of gun crime. Hence, gun-toting police officers may better able to protect themselves.

In conclusion, atlhough it is obviously true that the policemen who carry firearms may emerge violence, I certainly advocate the legal use of gun of the police to ensure the social security and defend all the citizens and themselve against the culprits.
