Many journalists appear to believe public relations writing to be of inferior quality. How are some ways that this perception might have come about and what can public relations writers do to change it?
Writing for public relations and for journalism can be compared to each other in term of quality of writing in many ways as their formats seem to be similar to each other. However, the purpose of writing seems to be different. Journalists are likely to write impartial content; their writing is likely to clarify and report facts to the public. They will find the deepest information and then report it to the public. In addition, journalists always write for the same purpose.
In contrast, Public relations writers have a different purpose of writing, although the format of writing seems to be similar to each other. Public relations writers will plan and manage information when dealing with controlled communication. The purpose of writing of public relations is to persuasive, specific and accurate, according to study guide week one (2006, p. 4) Public relations writers write a lot of article for the organization. Therefore, the messages which they try to communicate should suit to the purpose from that organization.
However, the relationship between journalists and public relations writers is so important. This is because public relations writers want journalists to publish their work and journalists also require some information from public relations people. Accordingly, public relations writers have to make a good relationship with journalists to maintain the appropriate stand in the medium. One of the most important things is the quality of the content. If public relations writers do their best, there will be no doubt that the journalists will have to change their bad perception immediately.
