Some of them are

I have made up the example below.

(1) Ten years ago, some of my friends went to the UK and worked there. Last year, some of them came back and got jobs here.

Most of my non-native English speaking friends think the second "some" makes that sentence sound odd. Why is it wrong? Thank you for your help.

It's not wrong.

I even think it is unambiguous.

Say you have 50 friends.

Ten years ago some (30) of them went to the UK.
Last year, some (10) of the 30 returned.
