If you break up the word 'dysgeusia' you might be able to decipher it. Dys stands for difficult, painful or as in this case.... dysfunctional. Geusis means 'taste'. Plainly speaking then, dysgeusia means your taste buds are not working properly. They are telling you things taste differently than they actually do or differently than most people would describe them.
