On Mars. Hi guys, can you please explain "knobs" in this context?

It's all bone dry now, something bad happened on Mars, some knobs got turned in its environment that left it the way it is right now. Some bad knobs got turned on Venus to runaway greenhouse effect

The speaker is basically asking you to imagine *** sitting at his control panel. It has a million ***** on it that he can rotate left or right to set conditions on the planets—hotter or colder, more or less oxygen, etc.
