Some kind/sort of (a?) [something]?

Hello there,

I've always wondered if there is any rule to using the indefinite article 'a' after 'some kind/sort of'. Is it optional? And, is there any difference in meaning/usage/etc between, for instance:
'Is this some kind of joke?' and 'Is this some kind of a joke?'

Thanks in advance Emotion: smile
