Some kind of a phrase

All right I've been wondering if the phrase stated below is correct and doesn't sound funny.

"When the flesh suffer, the spirit becomes tempered?"

Does it make any sense, or does it sound funny? Either way, any other suggestios of improving it? Thanks in advance.

It makes a little sense, but it does sound funny. It reminds me of "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" but maybe that's not quite what you're saying. CJ
