Some help with ASK/SAY

Hi,

I was recently watching this Hollywood movies and there was a dialogue like this
Person1: Do you need a bow man?
Person2: Silence (Ordering one of his soldiers to kill person 1, but that guy just killed him with his bow)
Person1: I said do you need a bow man?

So, here is where I am exactly confused.

Isn't it
1. I asked if you needed a bow man
or
2. I asked do/did you need a bow man

Thank you so much!

  • When you report in the form of an indirect question, you need 'asked'.
  • eg I asked if you needed a bow man But when you report in the form of a direct question, you can use either 'asked' or 'said'.
