Some help please

Hi everyone.

I came across a few sentences that puzzled me. I've highlighted the respective words that are puzzling me.

Thanks for your help.

"The first of many things he read WAS/WERE Matilda."

"It is clear that violence, desecration of property and intimidation directed towards Jews IS/ARE on the rise"

Regards,

Rob

" 'Was'. The subject is singular. "It is clear that violence, desecration of property and intimidation directed towards Jews IS/ARE on the rise" This is trickier.

  • " 'Was'.
  • The subject is singular.
  • "It is clear that violence, desecration of property and intimidation directed towards Jews IS/ARE on the rise" This is trickier.
  • It's simplest if you consider the subject is plural.
  • However, you might consider all three of these bad things to be so closely related that the whole phrase (violence, desecration of property and intimidation) is like a single subject.
