Some hard sentences - what do they mean?

1)"The people will tell you as much."

2)"They will on the defensive in the face of popular fury at his killing." (please break this sentence in smaller parts and explain each part. "On the defensive", "in the face", "at his killing"?? why not "at the face", "about his killing"?)
