Another sentence is:

The idea is that the side of the element is being constantly heated up and cooled down.
Is this sentence grammatically correct? Any commas needed? Can I use "cool" without "down"?

I don't have a copy of Scientific Style and Format, and you should, but going by book style, the dimension would be better as "6 x 6 m" (I have used a lowercase "x", but there is a multiplication symbol in some fonts "×".). Also, the asterisk is not universally understood to mean multiplication, even if it was appropriate there. "Square-shaped" is right enough, but "square" is sufficient.
