Essay & Composition Writing

Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

In our contemporary life, whether students should start learning a foreign language at an earlier stage or not is one of the most concerned issues. While some supporters consider that teaching a foreign language for children at primary school is better than at secondary school, others show an opposite view point. Although there are arguments to be made in support of both sides, there is likely a stronger point of view that studying second language in earlier age period will have more positive impact.

On the one hand, a handful of people claim that it is better to begin learning second language at secondary school. Firstly, elementary school is the first place to start exposing their mother tongue and other social skills. At this age, if pupils are obligated to study more languages, they can be overloaded and stress. This may have detrimental impacts on not only their academic results but also their physical health. Secondly, children at secondary school are having stronger capacity and mentality to study harder subjects like foreign languages. Fact indicates that the grower children are, the higher their concentration is.

On the other hand, looking at the issue from the other aspect, there are several reasons why people need to acquire foreign languages when they are in primary school. First of all, at a young age, children are quite enthusiastic and curious, thereby it is easy to to explore and learn novel things, especially in linguistic field. It is proved that young children pick up languages much more easily than teenagers. Moreover, to keep pace with the fast-paced development of globalisation, it is necessary to learn foreign language as soon as possible. Due to the fact that in recent years, many overseas companies have invested in some developing countries including Vietnam, English is a feasible tool to intergrate and it is also golden job opportunities for the young.

In conclusion, it is highly recommened that the youth should be encouraged to study non-native languages at elementary school because of its outstanding benefits.
