Some doubts about the sentence.

Hello again Emotion: smile

I'm watching an episode of Dr.Phil and I have just heard something like this:

"They knew each other since they were 7. " (a person is talking about dead girl and her killer)

I'm not sure if I have heard it correctly and here are my doubts about this sentence.

- Can we say in this context: They had/have known each other since they were 7?

I'm very curious about this Emotion: smile Thank you in advance for the explanation.
