Some difficult sentences to translate.HELP~~~~

1. It is better to be first with an ugly woman than the hundredth with a beauty.

2. Many a man has fallen in love with a girl in a light so dim he would not have chosen a suit by it.

3. What a diary as a rule? A document useful to the person who keeps it , dull to the contemporary who reads it ,invaluable to the student, centuries afterwards, who treasures it!

4. A natural unassuming woman whom they have been doing their best to spoil by making a lioness of her.

5 For all practical purposes history is ,for us and for the time being ,what we know it to be.

It's rather hard to understand these sentences ,can you help me paraphase them.

and in sentence 3 why does it say a diary as a rule?confused

well, it seems like old saying or something, is't from China ? 3 ; i think it's encouraging writing ur diary, maybe one day it can be some thing important.. 1 ; well it says that it's better for men to be the unique known for a woman, even if she is not beautiful, and it's not good for him to be one of her friends even if she's beautiful !

Fisharound1. It is better to be first with an ugly woman than the hundredth with a beauty. An ugly woman is likely to find it difficult to attract a man, so she will be untouched. A beautiful woman will attract many men so is "spoiled goods"..

It's a thoroughly misogynistic aphorism.
