"Some" before some group words

Hi. Please tell me if the following are correct. Please see the underlined parts. Thank you for your help in advance.

1. Some of the congregation were happy.
2. Some of the group were happy.
3. Some of the horde were happy.

Thank you. I think the words and phrases like "some," "many," "a few" and "a lot of" are called quantifiers. Now, I think we can substitute "some" nicely with the quantifiers "many" and "a few" for the following examples, but it does seem awkward (at best), if not wrong, to substitute the quantifier "a lot of" for "some." If you agree with what I said, why is that?
