Some?

Could emulsifiers cause the same health consequences in humans and be behind some of the obesity trend?
Could you tell me whether "Could emulsifiers be behind some of the obesity trend?" can be paraphrased into "Could emulsifiers be partially behind the obesity trend?"? Thanks in advance!

More or less. "behind some of the obesity trend" could be perceived as meaning "completely (or at least largely) responsible for certain cases of obesity", whereas "partially behind the obesity trend" could be perceived as meaning "partly responsible for many cases of obesity". However, this distinction is not clear-cut, and it is not clear that it was intended in the sentence you quote.

So what function does the "some"have in the sentence?

"some of the obesity trend" means a part of the obesity trend, as opposed to the whole of the obesity trend. It's just the same usage of "some of" as in "I ate some of the chocolates".
