Some?

"The event took place some five years ago" In my estimation, the meaning of this "some" is equal to that of "approximate"? Does this sound right?

The line is quoted from http://art.yale.edu/file_columns/0000/0066/borges.pdf

Thanks very much! I have one more question. Do "The event took place some five years ago" and "The event took place about five years ago" have a difference;formal/informal or something.
