Solution/expression reads (as)...

Hello! I took a math class some time ago, and the professor quite often used to write sentences like "...and the expression/solution reads..." and he then went on writing down the formula. I'm not a native speaker but I'm writing my thesis in english, and I'm now asking myself whether this kind of usage of the verb "read" is actually correct? Is "it reads as..." better? Or maybe both are rather informal and shoudn't be used in a thesis?

Thanks a lot!

" and he then went on writing down the formula. That is fine and standard English in that context.
