Soft spot

'I am a Physics major but I always had a soft spot for Chemistry'.

What does 'soft spot' means in the above sentence?

And, '.....but I always had....', what is 'had' being used? I do know that 'had' is a past tense and the person saying this sentence should still have a 'soft spot'for Chemistry so shouldn't 'have' be used instead? Emotion: hmm

Please explain, I am so confused.

Thanks. Emotion: smile

"soft spot" = rather liked something/somebody. In your example the person is studying Physics, but when at school/college ( past event ) liked Chemistry as well. They may well still have a soft spot for it, but they are talking about the past.
