The sounds /s/ and /j/ preceding the vowel /i/ and represented by letters c and g respectively are called soft (cinema, gin) in contrast with hard /k/ and /g/ (class, get).
I have only heard of long and short vowels, not soft (vs. hard?). CalifJim's "short i" list is an excellent example. Here are a few "long i" suggestions: identify, ice, iambic, ichor, icon, icy, Idaho, ideal, etc.
