Soft i

Hi.
One of my friends asked me to provide some examples of words containing soft i.
I came up with the followings.
I would be grateful if you could first confirm if I am right and then add several more.
I don't know exactly what it is implied by soft i.

I have never heard of "soft i". Maybe they meant "short i" or "lax i". 'friend' contains "short e", not "short i".

I have never heard of "soft i". Maybe they meant "short i" or "lax i".

'friend' contains "short e", not "short i".

The following contain "short i" ("lax i"):

mix, fist, kiss, wrist, mint, wish, sick, pit, grill, trim, ...

The sounds /s/ and /j/ preceding the vowel /i/ and represented by letters c and g respectively are called soft (cinema, gin) in contrast with hard /k/ and /g/ (class, get).

I have only heard of long and short vowels, not soft (vs. hard?).
CalifJim's "short i" list is an excellent example.
Here are a few "long i" suggestions:
identify, ice, iambic, ichor, icon, icy, Idaho, ideal, etc.

Soft i seems strange to me as well, but that is the term his native American English term used. I also think, she meant short i by saying soft i.
