socially divisive

Private education is often regarded as socially divisive.

Could you tell me what "socially divisive" means here?

Top answer

Those who go to private schools often move in exclusive social circles. Edit: There are other possibilities. It may mean that the expense of private schools bars many from attending them, or that the mere fact of a system separate from the public school system creates divisions in society.

Did you look up any of those words first, Gary? Which ones confuse you?

Particularly the "social circles"? What you mean by "circle" here?

I guess, "move in" = "move physically to inside of some place"; "exclusively" = "completely". Am I right?

a 'circle' can mean a group of people with something in common.

Nona The Brita 'circle' can mean a group of people with something in common.
Those who go to private schools often move in exclusive social circles.

So I can guess this sentence as, "Those who go to private schools often go to that place which is exclusively for a particular group of people". But I am afraid this is not correct.

Poeple who go to private schools tend to mix with other people who are the type to have been to a private school.

Rich people tend to mix with other rich people. Poor people tend to mix with other poor people. etc.

Yes, you've got the general idea, Gary-- just that it is 'move in' (participate/circulate within), not 'move into' (enter).

Socially divisive relates to factor in society which divides people

for instance private schools are viewed as socially divisive because they have such huge fees and only accept a limited amount of children from different schools
