Social golfer meaning?

Hi, What is the meaning of social golfer in the following text?

He had a 12:30 tee time at the Palm Beach Country Club; not that it mattered that much. He was a social golfer who played because he was expected to play.

Thanks

Top answer

He didn't play because he loved the game or because he wanted to become an expert. He played because people in his social and business position usually played golf. Playing golf gave them an opportunity to talk to each other.

It is a play on words from "social drinker", one who drinks alcohol only socially. He is not a "golfaholic", if you will.
