Social function

This puzzles me. In online dictionaries, "social funcftion" appears to uniquely refer to a sort of public events.
But what about this meaning: "The warlock has a precise social function in the structure of many tribal communities"? Is this a correct use?

Ok thanks. It does have the dual meaning in my language too, but you never know, so I asked.
