Vocabulary

social climber

It seems that 'social climber' has a negative connotation. Is there a positive terminology for 'a person who attempts to improve her/his social standing' ?

Thanks.

You can have an "up-and-comer," someone who shows a lot of promise and who people think will do well. I think it's usually applied to professional, rather than social, success though.

I would think 'upwardly mobile' would have the meaning that you are asking.

This, of course, is extracted from the acronym, Yuppy, which stands for young, upwardly mobile professional.

"a man of made" may be used for that.

Hi anon,

Thanks for your contribution but you haven't got the idom quite right. It is a 'self-made man', not 'a man of made'.
