soccer or football

I get confused with two words "soccer" and "football". Some dictionaries actually show that these two words can be used interchangeably but i don't think that way . plz clear my wondering.

Hi, Generally speaking, they can indeed be interchanged, except in N. America where there is another game that is comonly referred to as 'football'. Clive

Generally speaking, they can indeed be interchanged, except in N. America where there is another game that is comonly referred to as 'football'.
