Sobering

Hi.
What is a 'sobering' chess move'?

Is it that a sobering thing pours cold water on the audience?

Thanks in advance

The idea is that it sobers one's opponent. It makes one's opponent realize that victory will be more difficult than he expected. It's not a common adjective in chess literature, in my opinion.

"Sobering" is bringing someone away from fantasy to a harsh reality.

It isn't literally pouring cold water on someone, (though the literal term of sobering is to bring someone back from being drunk.)
