Soap box at ....

Hello

But it is not enough to have a good lyric or a great idea. If the tune or the musical location aren't right then you might as well be standing on a soap box at Speakers' Corner.

--- I understand that good lyrics is not enough, you also have to find a good melody and "musical location" (whatever it means?) otherwise your song would be useless/pointless/ I'm not sure this is what he means by saying: standing on a soap box at Speakers' Corner?

Speaker's Corner is a spot in London where the condemned were allowed to speak their piece before continuing to the gallows to be hanged. I think that the reference here alludes to the idea that nobody will listen because it's useless.

It was mostly religious fanatics the day I passed by. Whether by tradition or by law, they all stand on some sort of platform. It doesn't have to be, literally, a soap box. (Soap crate is more like it.) That is, they can

Thanks, CJ, for the additional info about the soap box and not being on British soil. Not sure I had heard that before.
