SO vs. VERY

Hi,

I'm dismayed by the growing popularity of "so" as a replacement for "very."

I'm so unhappy. In my experience, this is an exclamation.

I'm familiar with it in the negative, as a casual expression: "He's not so shaggy."

The movie was so good. Is this acceptable in formal writing?

Thanks, - A. Emotion: smile

To my ear, "so" must refer to something. "He's not so shaggy" = "He's not that shaggy."

"The movie was so good that it made me cry."
