All are possible, although the last is somewhat old-fashioned. He was very glad to see his friend is probably the most used.

Neither is more correct grammatically, but so is a mark of informal style, while very is stylistically neutral. In more formal contexts so takes a content clause: He was so glad to see his friend that he broke down in tears.
