so to replce adjectives

I know that we can replace adjectives for "so" after linking verbs to avoid word repetition.

I am happy but my wife is less so (=happy).

Still I have a niggling doubt as to the correctness of the 2nd sentence.

  1. They are happy. So am I.
  2. They are happy. I am so.

  3. thanks

I think Inchoateknowledge wants to understand why we can say "my wife is less so", but not "I am so" in the example given. The answer is that "so" has a linking function and can be used not only with adjectives: "They went home. So did I".
Some other examples:
We told him to go home. He did so. = He did what we told him to do.
We told him to go home, so he did = therefore he went home

Hi Lewis

"I think Inchoateknowledge wants to understand why we can say "my wife is less so", but not "I am so" in the example given." Yes

"The answer is that "so" has a linking function(? IMO, replacing function) and can be used not only with adjectives: "They went home. So did I"."

Hi, Inchoate. Yes, I accept your correction. The problem does not quite seem to be resolved; maybe someone else wants to contribute.

The second sentence "They are happy. I am so" is a sentence I'll never write.
