So they had THE dinner there

It was my son's birthday yesterday. My ex-wife's new boyfriend owns a restaurant, so they had the dinner there.


Would including 'the' be logic and natural here according to you or should I omit it? Thanks.

the dinner is ok if your readers all have birthday dinners, ie it's their custom. if not, say a dinner.
