Vocabulary

So that many familiar properties of things are necessarily neglected by the sciences.

Hello,

Could anyone paraphrase the words in blue and red?

Here is my try:

1. The words in blue = Science researches are the some important invariant relations of things, but scientists ignore the relations. For example, sciententists neglect the correlates between emotional inhitions and physical symptoms- i.e. asthma, etc.

2. The words in red = If we treat emotional inhibition, we virtually treat the bodily correlates, as inhibitory behavior is the external representation of internal mentality.

******************

(from Conditioned Reflex Therapy)

The bodily correlates of inhibition are extensive, and what I have said in this chapter applies as well to the treatment (for example) of hypochondria and certain of the asthmas; but I have selected these cases because they are typical and because they illustrate the fallacy of emphasizing the obvious symptom. In the words of Cohen and Nagel, "Theories are .. frequently regarded as `convenient fictions' or as 'unreal! However, such criticisms overlook the fact that it is just certain selected invariant relations of things in which science is interested, so that many familiar properties of things are necessarily neglected by the sciences."

Inhibitory behavior is the selected invariant relation in all the so-called psychosomatic manifestations. When we treat inhibition, we are getting at its bodily correlates.

The text in blue means: Science is only interested in certain (some) invariant relations of things. Science neglects many familiar properties of things. I'm not entirely sure about the text in red, but I think you got it right.
