Every Metabaron is in his youth mutilated by his father so that his endurance to pain is tested, and that he receives a powerful mechanical body part as a replacement for the destroyed limb - making every Metabaron a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyborg.

I'd like to know why "so" has been omitted before "that" despite there not being an auxiliary verb (may, could).

That is fine when that's all you've got, but here it seems to me that both clauses are a complement of 'mutilated'. You shouldn't separate one of them from its referent with a comma and the other not

That's a good solution to the problem. Maybe the writer was torn between 'so that' and zero conjunction and thereby ended up with just 'that'.

Both of your sentences mean the same—#1 is passive and #2 is active. And neither says what I said:

You should not [separate one but not the other one].
