The desire to expand trade urged people to travel the boundaries of their own countries. So that in the 16th century, merchants from Portugal reached Japan.

Is the underlined usage close to “Therefore”? Is it common to use “So that” in the beginning of the sentence as opposed to in the middle?

This use of "so that" is incorrect.

"travel the boundaries" also appears to be incorrect. It seems that it should say e.g. "travel beyond the boundaries".
