Grammar

,so still did she sit,

The protagonist is now staying at the farm house of his distant relative Vinta.

I made my way to the stairs and headed down. I was almost to the bottom before I noticed her, so still did she sit, there beside the window to my right, a tray of bread and cheese, a bottle and goblet on a small table at her side.
["Trumps of Doom" of The Great Book of Amber by Roger Zelazny]
I'd like to know "so" means "in such a way."
And I'd like to know if an adjective "still" modifies "sit."
Thank you in advance for your help.

"so" has the same meaning as in "she sat so still that I was almost to the bottom before I noticed her".

"still" is an adverb modifying "sit".

No, the word "that" would not make sense there.
