"So perilous are the lands now become..."

Hello all.

The quotation I have used for the title is from "Lord of the Rings", and I suppose you already know what troubles me: I would certainly
have changed "are" to "have": "So perilous have the lands now become that..". I don't understand the structure of this sentence with "are".

Thanks in advance,
Anton

I would say that it is rather a matter of style than that of grammar. The original sentence gives a sense of old English, a sense of ancient times, may be.
