So or so that or that

Hi. Please tell me which is correct. I think numbers 1 and 2 are correct for both of the following example sentences, but I'm not sure about number 3. Thank you in advance for your help.

1. The book was published (1) so (2) so that (3) that people would know him better.
2. He was made successful (1) so (2) so that (3) that his family would be well provided for.

You need at least "so". "that" is optional, but it can't stand on its own without "so". So 1 and 2 are OK, and 3 is not OK.
