Q)Mr.Patterson said that his strong background in retailing would be ------- helpful in new job.
A) so much B) especially
The correct answer is B)especially. I know because "so much" is a kind of adjective which can't modify another adjective. That's why it should be "especially".
The question I want to ask is whether or not I can replace "very much" in that sentence. I think I can. (1) Am I right ?
The adverb of "very" can modify adjectives and the adverb phrase can modify verbs.(2) Am I right ? Please confirm them.
Top answer
We can have very helpful, especially helpful, and so helpful. We cannot have much helpful, so much helpful or very much helpful.

What I asked to you for was whether or not "very much" can modify verb, not the adjective of "helpful". I made a little mistake in what I wanted to ask. Anyway, thank you so much for your kind answers. It's really helpful to me. I have found where I made mistake and fully understood for "so much" and "very much". Thanks again.
