Is this a correct sentence? Is it okay to use "so much" in this way?

I don't know why, but the president has been criticized so much lately.

so much is quite often used to mean a lot, but to my mind it is a little substandard. so much implies a consequence, so I'd say eg . .

For your original sentence, I suggest eg . . . the president has been criticized a great deal lately.
