so in compound sentence

Please give your comments.
I am not convinced with using so as a coordinating conjunction in compound sentence, which we say has two independent clauses.
She learns French and I learn German.
Here I am able to convince the students that each is independent of the other.
But in " She was feeling bored, so she went for a stroll" I am unable to convince that they are independent.

- Nevertheless, "coordinating conjunction" is defined to include these troublesome words.
- Perhaps the clauses are not independent from the point of view of semantics (meaning), but they are independent from the point of view of syntax (grammar).
