"So far"

Does 'so far' normally have a comma after it?

Hi, It depends on the context. Are you using it in a place where you would naturally pause briefly in speaking? Would you like to show us a few sentences?

Hi,

It depends on the context.
Are you using it in a place where you would naturally pause briefly in speaking? Would you like to show us a few sentences?

Example: "so far I've been to X" etc.

Hi,
eg I want to visit many countries in Asia. So far, I've been to Thailand and South Korea.

Yes, I would pause there for a second, to let the listener absorb the idea that I am thnking about my travels in both the past and the future.

What if it's an instant beginning with 'so far', not including your wishes for the future?

Hi,
Please offer an example.
eg Tom meets his friend Mary and they say 'Hello'. What does Tom say next?

The same example... just without stating where you wish to go beforehand. "Hello. So far I've been to X..."

Hi,

Let's try to be realistic. How is Mary supposed to know what Tom is starting to talk about?

Because it doesn't need a context... it's simply a statement Tom is making, a fact that he's been to 'X'.

I don't agree.

What would you propose as an alternative to 'so far' to avoid the implication, then?
