So far

-Are things going to plan so far?
-He is so far the most interesting person I have ever met.

Is the use of so far correct in both sentences?

What is the difference between so far and by far? Could you give us an example?

Hi, "So far" means "until now". It means, in the interval of TIME up to and including the present moment. "By far" means "greatly".

  • Hi, "So far" means "until now".
  • It means, in the interval of TIME up to and including the present moment.
  • "By far" means "greatly".
  • To "exceed by far" is to "greatly exceed", so it's a measure of EXTENT, not of time.
  • So you could even say " So far , he is by far the most interesting person I have ever met".
