SO AS TO / SO I WOULDN'T

Which would you say please?

- I had to clear my thought so as not to think about it/so I wouldn't think about it.

You've got me there. I don't use that construction very often. You could use it as you have above, though that wasn't my first choice, as you know from my reply. Often you can leave out so as in the affirmative form without changing the meaning.
