If there is "be"(am/is/are) in the sentence, you should reply with "so am I".

If there is notional verb in the sentence, you should use "so do I".

For example,

(1)---She is a teacher. --- So am I.

(2)---I am 16. ---So am I.

(3)---I like apples. ---So do I.

(4)---They want to go shopping. ---So do I.

In other words, your auxiliary verbs must match.

A: I am going to New York next year.
B: So am I!

A: I live in Italy. (You use do/don't as the auxiliary in the question or in negative sentences)
B: So do I!

Would "So I am" be wrong?
In other terms, must the verb and pronoun, after "so" be always in reverse order?
Thank you
