So adjective that

Hi teachers~

Would you correct me if I am wrong?

The following sentences seem to mean the same.

I was so tired that I went to bed early.

I went to bed because I was so tired.

My guess is that so adjective sentence is more formal and is used when the second part of the sentence (that I went to bed early) is long.

Thanks in advance.
