1. Press freedom has never been as threatened as it is now.

or

2. Press freedom has never been so threatened as it is now.

Both are correct. In negative sentences both so - as and as - as can be used: I am not so/as old as he. CB

Writers are usually advised to use 'so' with a negative in those kinds of sentences, and Google Ngrams shows that 'so' occurs more often in that context than 'as'.

Nevertheless, both are acceptable.
