So

The sentence:
I found that I had fallen into the trap of believing that I had to do everything today, or at the very latest, by tomorrow, so I was constantly working under unnecessary pressure, which was no fun.

About "so I was constantly working...", which interpretation is correct?

1: I found+so I was constantly working...

2: I had fallen into the trap+so I was constantly working...

3: believing that......

4: I had to do everything today+so I was constantly working...

I think it's #3 (or maybe #2), but my book says it's #1...

Hi Taka. I would agree; 2 or 3. 2 seems the best fit for me, but there are many better grammarians here who may have other opinions.

Yes, I'd go for #2 too.

'I had done X, so I did Y.'

Yeh, grammatically #2 is better than #3. I agree.

But still I cannot cross out the possibility of #3 because that the person was constantly working also seems to be a part of the trap he/she had fallen into...

I would say #1 is correct, though this means I challenge the opinions of native English speakers.

Here's my thought: "so" can be replaced by "therefore", which means what follows "so" is a consequence of the matter described before. The consequence is an "UNNECESSARY pressure". Now if you "believe you have to do everything today, or ...", then this pressure is indeed necessary. As it i

I wonder whether I've misunderstood the question, Taka.

What do the five options represent in each case – a summary of the structure, or a précis of the meaning?

I don't think you've misunderstood the question, MrP.

The question is, which part of the sentence should be logically connected to "so I was constantly working...".

For your information, eagle2184, here is the entire paragraph:
Once I decided to simplify my life, one of the first things I did in terms of my business life was to cut back on my workday by 10 percent. I simply scheduled my day to end an hour earlier. I was surprised at how east it was, and how little difference one hour less made in terms of my productivity. In fact, if anythi

I don't think it can be #1, then, pace the author of your book. 'I found' is parenthetical to the sense. ('I had fallen into the trap, I found,...')

What about the possibility of #3, MrP?
