American Heritage Dictionary, in a usage note, explains that "snuck" is very common, even among educated speakers; it goes on to say that many people still prefer the more formal "sneaked". I probably use "snuck" in daily speech, but I would always use "sneaked" in formal writing.

I would never use "snuck" in any situation. I've always assumed it's American English. Collins English Dictionary (a British publication) agrees and also calls it "not standard".

Hi,

My feeling is that, when educated people use 'snuck', they are doing it in a slightly arch way, ie as a tiny little joke, because they know it is so obviously wrong.

If the conversation were about some very serious topic, I don't think they would be so likely to use the word.

Best wishes, Clive
