Snogging?

This one popped up a lot in the sixth volume of Harry Potter. Harry snogged Cho, Hermione snogged Krum, Ron snugged Lavender, Ginny snogged Dean. Have looked it up in my dictionary with no result. What's the meaning of "snogging"? Is it "kissing", "dating", or "hugging"?

Top answer

Kissing, typically combined with cuddling. It suggests something more than a brief kiss.

Without wishing to go into too much graphic detail, for me, "snogging" involves tongues.

I rarely hear "snog" these days, and when I do I always think of the Barron Knights' parody of "Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs":
With big rosettes and coloured scarves
They go to cheer their favourite stars
They all look forward to their Saturdays.
There's one young lad walks down our street
With bovver boots upon his feet

Yes, but not necessarily young children. I suspect that young readers who are ready for Harry Potter will generally be old enough to know about snogging, even if their personal experience may be limited.
